Making a bad film even worse

When I watched Waterworld in theaters, I was taken out of the film’s world in less than a minute. Sure I going to simply roll with the fact that there is a leap in logic setting the film a few hundred years in the future and the polar ice caps have melted covering the globe in nothing but water. I can run with this “what if” scenario. No, what upset me right from the beginning of the film was the opening scene where Kevin Costner’s character urinates into a cup, then pours it into a filtration system in order to purify the water for drinking and watering of plants. If you can repurpose urine for drinking water, you should be able to do the same for the ocean, making the issue of “pure” water being rare vanish.
This of course doesn’t go into the other various plot holes such as how so many cigarettes have survived all this time.
When I received Waterworld: 2-Disc Extended Edition on DVD I was actually anxious to watch it because I was hoping this would shed some light on these plot points helping them to make sense. Sadly, this was not the case. Instead, we simply get the theatrical version and a second disc which adds 45 minutes of footage back into the film making it 3 hours long. Instead of making the film better, this new extended cut just makes it longer.
Adding insult to injury, there is no reason for the film to come on two discs. On the first disc we get the theatrical version of the film. On the second disc the extended version. The technology exists to have both versions on the same disc, so this is especially bothersome. No extras at all. None.
Do not buy this DVD.
| What Works | Score |
|---|---|
| + The "Road Warrior" on water | 1.0 |
| What Doesn't | |
|
- Stupid plot holes insult the audience - The extended version just makes the film longer, not better - 2 discs where one would do - No extras |

| Under the Shrink-wrap | |
| I want my 3 hours back. | |
