<br />

I haven’t seen The Tigger Movie since it was in theaters 9 years ago. I took my oldest son who was, at the time, getting to be too old for the world of Winnie the Pooh, but he liked going to the movies and I have never lost my love for the world that A.A. Milne has created. I went more for me than for him, really.

I didn’t expect much, really, because Disney at the time was churning out a number of direct to video sequels of questionable quality and this seemed to be the same thing, only of slightly higher visual quality giving it a limited theatrical run. The Tigger Movie was the first in what would be a long line of sequels (some theatrical, most not) to the 1977 The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh. There was no basis in the books for the story of Tigger trying to find where he comes from, so I sat down in the theater not expecting to actually enjoy The Tigger Movie as much as I did.

Now my younger children are beginning to grow out of the phase in their lives when Pooh Bear is beginning to lose some of his appeal. I Still hold dear the characters of the 100 Acre Wood, so watching The Tigger Movie on DVD is much more for me than anything else. I still have one kid who actually has yet to enter that phase of his life, so I expect to relive these stories all over again. I wanted to see if The Tigger Movie held up over time and to the warm memory I held from 10 years ago.

To my surprise, The Tigger movie still holds up quite well. Maybe it was the product of a bit more effort on the part of the writers and other folks behind the scenes, because there is quite a bit of “heart” here. Family is not always who your parents are, and in a way the film can be seen as a sort of parable with adoption as a subtext. There are some touches where the modern world encroaches on the fantasy of the 100 Acre Wood, but thankfully they are kept to a minimum.

While the animation may not be at the same level as most theatrical Disney films, I had recently rewatched The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh as well and noticed that the animation there wasn’t always as good as people seem to remember. The Tigger Movie comes at the head of a long line direct to video releases using characters that A.A. Milne created, most are decent, but this is perhaps the best.

Special features include a couple of episodes of The New Adventures of Winnie The Pooh, a Saturday morning cartoon from the late 80’s. I really wish the whole series would get released, because I used to watch it and really enjoyed it. These are “new” special features, and the episodes have storylines that focus on Tigger. Other returning special features are not as great as perhaps they should be, but at least nothing significant has been dropped. We gat a matching game, music video, storybook, and some other fun stuff. Sadly, none of the special features are of any real substance, unfortunately.

While it isn’t actually the 10th anniversary of the film (that would be in February of next year) this new edition of The Tigger Movie is quite welcome for those that have yet to include it in their collection. If you are a fan of Winnie The Pooh, you owe it to yourself to check it out.
