sat morn 60 vol 2 boxFollowing the release of the first volume, we now get the second sampler of Saturday Morning Cartoons – 1960’s. What I said in my review of the first volume still holds true. This is a collection of shorts and episodes from the 1960’s that isn’t organized well. I’m not saying that everything needs to be released in complete season or series sets, but this is a decent sampler, but altogether falls short when combined with the previous collection

As a nostalgic trip down cartoon lane, this collection works very well. Unfortunately it isn’t organized very well. There is nothing on the case listing what is on the discs, and the menu layout is needlessly cumbersome. For those interested, here is what is included on Saturday Morning Cartoons 1960’s Volume 2:

Disc 1

Quick Draw McGraw Show featuring “Person to Prison” starring Snooper and Blabber, the Auggie Doggie short “Vacation Tripped” and the main character in “Mine Your Manners”

The Space Kidettes segment “Space Heroes”

Young Samson & Goliath segment “The SSX-19”

The Bugs Bunny Show featuring the shorts “Big House Bunny”, “Canned Feud”, and “Home Tweet Home”

The Porky Pig Show with the shorts “Scaredy Cat”, “Baton Bunny”, and “Feather Dusted”

The Adventures of Young Gulliver episode “Dangerous Journey”

The Wally Gator Show with the segments/shorts “Droopy Dragon” (starring Wally), Touché Olé (and Dum Dum) in “Whale of a Tale” and Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har in “Sea Saw”

The Jetsons episode “Elroy’s Mob”

Disc 2

Quick Draw McGraw with the shorts “The Mark of El Kabong” featuring … well, figure it out, “Chilly Chiller” starring Snooper and Blabber and Auggie Doggie in“Party Pooper Pop”

The Peter Potamus Show with the shorts “Wagon Train Strain” “Missile Fizzle” featuring Breezly and Sneezly and Yippee, Yappee and Yahooey in“Black Bart”

The Road Runner Show with the shorts “Zip and Snort” “The jet Cage” and “The Wild Chase”

The Atom Ant show with the segments “Atom Ant meets Karate Ant” Precious Pupp in “Bowling Pinned” and The Hillbilly Bears in “Picnic Panicked”

The Tom & Jerry Show with the shorts “Saltwater Tabby”, “Mutts About Racing” (starring Droopy) and “Just Dicky”

The Magilla Gorilla Show with the shorts “Private Magilla” featuring the title character, “Army Nervy Game” featuring Punkin’ Puss & Mushmouse and “TV Show” featuring Ricochet Rabbit & Droop-a-Long.

The only special feature comes on the second disc, a (far too) short featurette looking at Magilla Gorilla. Sadly, there are a lot of repeated characters and shows between the first and second volumes. Do we really need this many episodes of The Jetsons? Why isn’t Johnny Quest on either volume? Or Yogi Bear? Or Wacky Races?

So is this a collection worth picking up? You get over 5 hours of cartoon fun for a list price of $25. You should be able to find it for much less than that. Some of these shows are available on DVD (Flintstones, Jetsons, Magilla Gorilla) while others are not. So it really comes down to nostalgia. That sense of nostalgia is very strong here, and this collection is a great visit down memory lane and a great way to introduce today’s younger (and more jaded) cartoon viewers to the simple pleasures of when cartoons were much more entertaining not simply marketing ploys.
