Nick Swardson: Seriously Who Farted?

Swardson should have stuck with being a sidekick

nick swarsdon dvd boxNick Swardson may be best known as the guy who lived with his parents and slept in a race car bed in Grandma’s Boy. Comedy Central jus t released his stand up special: Seriosuly Who Farted? on DVD. To be honest I forgot all about the guy, even with some guest roles on Reno 911, he hasn’t stayed all that prominent. His comedy special shows why.

The consummate co-star, Swardson is generic, yet entertaining.  His humor is a mixture of silly voices and stupid stories. He focuses on stores of partying and hanging out with Adam Sandler. It never manages to ring very true and was immediately forgettable. Swardson’s largest problem is that he isn’t a standup comedian. Most of his skills in TV and movies are based on silly voices, and a willingness to be ridiculous. Those skills aren’t use when you’re standing in front of a crowd talking. He tries to incorporate some of the voices in his act, but it doesn’t work out well.

Some of his stories are sheer self-promotion. He plugs his relationship with Adam Sandler, and their failed Comedy Central pilot for a show called Gay Robot. I for one would like to thank Comedy Central for showing a little restraint on that one. Swardson’s stories here go on to tell us about Grandma’s Boy, and he manages to touch on every project that might swing the audience to his side. It’s pretty shameless, and ultimately boring. It wasn’t as if George Carlin started talking about filming Dogma during his stand up act.

The special features are actually some of the funniest bits, well except for one of them. The opening act for the show is this terrible musical act, just skip it and never look back. There are two skits that really show off his skills as a comedic actor, a spoof trailer for 28 drinks later, and a mockumentry about his career as a comedian that dates back to the silent film era. Both show that he is capable as a comedic writer an actor.

Sadly enough those two bits aren’t enough to save this DVD. Swardson gained a lot of popularity in Grandma’s Boy, and no one can blame him for trying to cash in some of that success, he may have been wiser to choose something he had more talent in. Although, this won’t hurt his chances of being in every Adam Sandler movie between now and the heat death of the universe.
