Remembering why certain people are stars

<br />

Lindsay Lohan is Cady, who has been “home” schooled for the last 12 years while her parents were working in Africa. We meet up with her on her first day of a more traditional school setting, which happens to be the hell that is high school. This is the setup for Mean Girls and the fish out of water and revenge plots that come about.

Written by current comedy “it-girl” Tina Fey (who also has a supporting role) there is a certain acerbic quality to the humor in Mean Girls that is partially beyond the years of the characters – which is a bit of the appeal. There is a good balance of drama and comedy that plays out a bit predictable, but it’s a fun ride.

I should point out that the decent script is nothing without solid execution, and Lindsay Lohan delivers a solid performance. The rest of the cast is solid, but this is Lohan’s movie through and through. Mean Girls was made before the actress went on a self-destructive bender, so she is on top of her game here displaying why she deserves to be a star.

Mean Girls explores the various social cliques in school, and at times compares them to the various animal groups in Africa. This was some of the more unique stuff in the film, and my greatest complaint about the film is that it doesn’t explore this more.

On Blu-ray we get what has been previously released – sadly all in standard definition. We get a number deleted scenes, promotional pieces and some featurettes that are fairly standard. We are also presented with an audio commentary with Tina Fey, director Mark Waters and Lorne Michaels.

While Tina Fey has gone on to success on television, Lindsay Lohan took a downward spiral. What does this have to do with this Blu-ray version of Mean Girls? Not much, but I should probably quit reading my wife’s gossip magazines before writing reviews.
