Jonas Brothers 3D Extended Movie

The full title of the film is far too long for what it is

I’m trying very hard not to be completely disparaging to The Jonas Brothers as a musical act simply based on age and style. I have no problem with “teen bubblegum pop” as a general rule (you might be surprised by some of the additions to my music collection) but the true gems are often harder to find these days among the masses of cubic zirconia. Where do these young lads from New Jersey fare in the musical pantheon? I’ll leave that debate to a different time. Instead, I examine Jonas Brothers The 3D Concert Experienced Deluxe Extended Movie as a casual fan – because if you’re already the hardcore JoBro fan, you simply gotta pick this up to have them in your living room.

For those that don’t necessarily know who these young men are, there isn’t anything here that will be particularly compelling. We get the boys performing interspersed with “personal” looks into their lives backstage. Frankly, all this does is simply chop up the musical experience, and if you’re a young fan these moments will be cherished. If, however, you simply want to enjoy the music the lads have to offer, it is an annoying distraction.

Also annoying is the fact that this is not a complete concert. Yes, we get an extended version of what we saw in theaters with a couple of extra tunes, but there are two more songs presented as bonus features. What was left on the cutting room floor? Why weren’t these two “bonus” songs folded back into the film as well?

And then there’s the “Up Close & Personal” featurette which runs about 15 minutes. Why is some of the footage included in the film? Maybe this should have been expanded into a full “making of” documentary for the fans leaving the concert film to simply be a concert film.

Jonas Brothers The 3D Concert Experience Deluxe Extended Movie isn’t bad as a package, but it simply seems to fall short of its potential. 20 years from now fans will look back on this and wish that it weren’t as neatly scrubbed and artificially sanitized as part of a perpetuation of the brand and image.

The 3D effects work well too, which was surprising, but you need a decent television. The included DVD is a 2D version of the film and the 3rd disc is a digital copy. Buena Vista really went all out in trying to create as complete a home video offering as they could, it’s just a shame that the film itself doesn’t match.
