A Chorus Line is legendary on Broadway, a musical about a musical, and a little closer to real life than one expected when it first debuted. Now with the latest revival, we get a “making of” as well as a history of the show.
Every Little Step takes the audition process for the latest Broadway revival of A Chorus Line to show(partially) not only what it takes to get a show up and running, but also to tell the story of the original which has it own interesting story.
Among the things we learn is how Marsha Mason changed the plot of the show after it was already set. We learn how many of these roles were originated and how they take shape in this revival through the audition process, which is interesting, seeing as A Chorus Line is a show about the audition process.
Along with the current show gong into production and the interviews with the potential cast members, we get some vintage and current interviews with people that were involved with the original show. This all ties together to demonstrate just how timeless A Chorus Line is because it is about the struggles of “making it” and this is a type of behind the scenes of a behind the scenes story.
The movie is for anybody who likes Broadway, as it is very much a Broadway story. No, it’s not for theater nerds, but a story of what it takes, at least partially, to find the right cast for a show.
Special features start off with an audio commentary that is decent, but lacking in any real insight. Instead, stick with the more than 30 minutes of deleted scenes which further explores the history of the original production. We also get about 25 minutes of interviews with some key people.
One sees how A Chorus Line really demonstrates what goes on during the audition process, and Every Little Step takes that even further, from the initial open call to the final call backs. Well worth watching.
| What Works | Score |
|---|---|
|
+ Great story and history intertwined + Decent special features |
8.0 |
| What Doesn't | |
|
- Not much of a sense of many of the individual's stories - Some of the historical stuff should have been folded back into the feature |
|
| Under the Shrink-wrap | |
| If you know A Chorus Line at all, this will be of interest. | |
