The conclusion of Jak III was most likely a pretty sad moment in a lot of gamer’s lives, knowing full well they would be without any more Jak titles in the future, instead left with a suprisingly good racing game and the recently-release Daxter on the PSP. Well, much in the way that Jak X: Combat racing surprised, Daxter does too and makes a very strong claim for best title on the PSP.

The story of Daxter takes place during the second game, more importantly the two years that Jak spent in prison in Haven City. During this time, Daxter made his claim for fame as he starred in an adventure all his own, a conflict that has been scaled down to meet its pint-sized hero. During those two years where Jak was being pumped full of junk, Daxter was in the trenches, doing the dirty work and taking care of bug infestations.

A lot of thegame is spent completing objectives in sprawling environments. Each area tasks you with a main objective, yet also allows you to persue die tasks like collecting precursor orbs. The environments themselves are very large and have many enemies littered around. In these environments, Daxter has a lot of interaction at his fingertips through jump pads and some light environmental puzzles.

Daxter roster of moves keep things fresh, whether it’s in his platforming exploration or combat. Daxter comes equipped with an electric flyswatter which lets him slap bugs like they owed him money. Later on, he gains the use of insecticide spray which can double as a flamethrower/jet pack. Daxter’s arsenal of weaponry really lets him get the job done, and the responsive controls also make this an effortless task, yet the occasional camera glitch will cause a problem.

The graphics in Daxter also showcase the power of the PSP and the devotion to the characters by the developers as not only Daxter, but all of the game’s other inhabitants, showcase a lot of originality and emote very well. The enviroments are also impressive, as Haven City is recreated through the eyes of Daxter and display a lot of diversity in its areas which are fairly linear, but don’t get in the way of the fun.

As a fan of the Jak titles, you’ll definately find a lot of nostalgic content in Daxter and marvel at the broad range of abilities this seemingly slapstick sidekick possesses. If you’ve never played a Jak title, this is a solid platforming title on a handheld that many wouldn’t think it possible on and might even elicit some interest in the Jak titles. One of the best titles to grace the PSP, Daxter is well worth your time.
