We just recieved some exclusive info from a source we can’t divulge (oooh, mysteeeerious) that developer Starbreeze (best known for their spectacularly good The Chronicles of Riddick: The Escape From Butcher Bay), and Majesco (publisher of Bloodrayne and Advent Rising) are hard at work on a game based on the Top Cow comic franchise The Darkness. The game will be released on next-gen systems, specifically the successor to the Xbox.

While there’s obviously no news of a release date yet, it may well be the game is being created to coincide with the release of an upcoming film based on the franchise being released by Dimension Films, something that’s apparently already announced.

The Darkness, created by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis and David Wohl, is the opposing force to the Witchblade, about an ancient evil force (called, naturally, the Darkness) that has come to be weilded by a good guy, a mob hitman named Jackie Estacado. At night, the Darkness gives him the ability to create anything he can imagine, although a group called the Angelis is now bent on taking him out so they can rid the world of the Darkness for good, and another group called the Brotherhood of The Darkness wants to use him for their own purposes. Oh, and he can’t get anyone pregnant or he dies. Yeah, I’m not sure how that would translate to a videogame but… uhm…. yeah.

Given that Starbreeze’s last licensed project went so well, we can’t wait to see what they do on the Xbox 2, and look forward to this title with great anticipation.
