Pittsburgh was the setting for the mid-summer classic known as the MLB All-Star game. If interleague play was any indicator, the AL All-Star team looked poised to dominate in both hitting and pitching. However, the 2006 All-Star Game also showcased a contrasting game between the veteran AL stars and young blooming talent of the NL stars. 2K Sports wanted to see if the youngin’s from the NL could pull an upset and surprisingly enough, the NL Stars gave the AL all it could handle sending the game to extra innings until solo shots by Joe Mauer and Jim Thome gave the AL Stars a 4-2 victory in the 10th inning.
NL Manager Phil Garner handed the ball to crafty veteran lefty Tom Glavine, while the AL stars countered with the unbeaten Jose Contreras. Of the two, Contreras had a much easier time cruising through four scoreless innings, highlighted by striking out the side in the third. Despite getting himself into a great deal of trouble by walking six batters over his three innings, Glavine was Houdini-esque eluding any damage.
In the top of the fourth inning, the AL struck first. Following Glavine being replaced by Cris Carpenter, Ichiro hit a one-out triple. Derek Jeter then slapped a single to right field to stake out a 1-0 lead for the AL. That score would remain until Alex Rodriguez stepped to the plate in the 7th inning and hit a tape measure solo homerun to extend the lead to 2-0.
The NL Stars would claw back however –Kenny Rogers would get into trouble in the bottom of the 7th as he hit Jason Bay and would walk the next batter, pinch-hitter Miguel Cabrera. This was all the opportunity Jose Reyes needed. He doubled off Rogers, scoring both runs and deadlocking the game 2-2. Rogers then gave up a bloop single to Chase Utley to end his night. Johan Santana then struck out Albert Pujols and induced Soriano to hit into a double play, ending the NL scoring threat.
The NL Stars would then turn to grizzled change-up specialist Trevor Hoffman while the AL Stars countered with young flame throwing phenom Papelbon in the 8th – both of which tossing scoreless frames. In the ninth, Tom Gordon was sent out to face his two former Yankee teammates. Gordon immediately put his team in danger by walking both Jeter and A-Rod, but escaped harm by retiring the next three batters. The AL Stars then brought in Bobby Jenks to retire the side in order, sending the game into extra innings.
Going into the 10th, Derrick Turnbow was brought in to pitch for the NL Stars. Pinch hitting for Ivan Rodriguez, Joe Mauer turned on the first pitch he saw from Turnbow for a home run, giving the AL Stars a 3-2 lead. AL Manager Jose Guillen rolled the dice again with another pitch hitter, and Jim Thome rewarded his manager with another solo shot to give the AL Stars a 4-2 lead that they would not relinquish. AL Stars would bring in “the closer” Mariano Rivera who would retire the side easily giving the AL a 4-2 victory and home field advantage in the World Series during this riveting 10 inning battle.
