Digital Entertainment News has never officially awarded a Game of the Year award before. There are many reasons for this, but what it boils down to is that we have never been able to come to a consensus about the best game in any given year. Chalk it up to personal tastes – some of us love one genre or another, while others despise it, or simply don’t have enough experience with a series or genre to objectively judge its quality. Heck, one of our staffers has never played a Final Fantasy game, at least a few have never touched Madden, and one of us even has the audacity to hate the Mario series (I daren’t name names, though).
However, this year has brought us a title that virtually all of us are in unanimous agreement on. This game has eaten up hundreds and possibly even thousands of hours of our staff’s time. We were expecting great things long before it came out, and yet after it was released, it still managed to absolutely floor us. This game was a constant excuse for missed appointments and delayed deadlines, and even those of us with no interest in the genre took notice.
It might seem like laying it on thick, but we feel this is a tremendous honor – most game websites give out a Game of the Year award every year, but this is the first time that Digital Entertainment News has ever felt so confident, so enthusiastic, so outright thrilled about a game that we can proudly declare it our official choice for the best game released in the last year. It’s never happened before, and it may not happen again. Thus, it is with great pleasure that Digital Entertainment News announces our selection for Game of the Year 2006…
