The XBLA titles that brings back fond memories

XBLA games are getting to be a dime a dozen with a new list of forgettable titles jamming new releases until something interesting like Bionic Commando: Rearmed or Mega Man 9 comes along. Mostly this is because half of the games began life as a flash game that has been monetized by adding some new features and controller support. Things on Wheels or TOW, stupid name aside, teeters between forgettable and charming.

The controls are fairly simple, meaning you won’t have to master Forza 2 to put any time in on this title. If you were a fan of the Micro Machines game back during the NES era, you get the idea of this game. Getting to play around the living room in an inch high car is pretty fun, and the level design is rather cool. Taking you little RC Car under the couch beats pretty much any race track out there. For a downloadable title there is an attention to detail in the levels that I can certainly appreciate. Getting the backgrounds down is essential to make this title immersive.

However with 20 different cars and 20 levels how much fun can there really be. I don’t know about the prospect of trying to make a downloadable toy into an in-depth experience. I’m pretty on the fence about this title, as there may not be any reason to play this that much. The controls are pretty light, but the game isn’t anywhere near immersive enough to warrant that much play time. Hopefully later levels will involve more challenge and varied design to make this more than a simple toy.
