MX vs ATV: Untamed (Hands On)

All the fun of dirt tracks without the risk of a broken collarbone.

Motocross involves a dirtbike on a mud track and insane stunts done in midair. ATV’s racing style is almost identical. With such complimentary natures, these sports have already shared the console spotlight in, MX vs. ATV: Unleashed. Returning to the match up THQ is bringing MX vs. ATV: Untamed to every console for Christmas.

The main attraction in this release lineup is the “next-gen” HD PS3 and Xbox 360 consoles. Even the controls are identical. The high definition power has been used to render every inch of the track experience from crowds to mud that moves around the track as you crash and burn. The PS2 ends up just being an uglier version of that game, although it does have the same control scheme as its big brother system. The trick interface is a bit, well, tricky, involving holding down a button and then doing some control stick gymnastics quick enough to still stick the landing.

If you’re a fan of watching MTX riders crash, you’ll see plenty of that. In fact the riders end up contorting into some pretty amazing shapes before getting back on the horse. Like Tony Hawk, it doesn’t matter how badly you hurt your rider, they always get back up to ride again. This comparison is pretty fair for the game in general, while the action plays out differently, the controls are eerily similar. You aren’t confined to the arena for the whole game; there are levels that are tracks built around farms and other muddy environs. You’ll be able to spend quality time riding ATVs or dirtbikes with friends with the online system.

The Wii version of the game includes some motion controlled tricks, and the most surprising part of that system is how intuitive it is. The PSP actually looks to be the same game as the PS2, albeit with scaled down controls. The DS version comes through with the old handheld ports we’ve had for years: simplified action, and ugly graphics.

MTX vs. ATV: Untamed gets the award of lamest sequel titling of the year, but the game itself delivers a tight experience. The DS borders on cart racing, but the consoles and PSP deliver a solid racing experience with intuitive trick controls.
