Fairy Tale Fights

Fractured Fairy Tales meets Postal.

fairy tale fights prev 01Once upon a time there was game that tried to be so violent it was clear on into the absurd.  Fairy Tale Fights dumps so much blood on the screen that it looks like Jackson Pollack meets Jack the Ripper.  Within moments of beginning the first stage it becomes like the Black Knight scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, especially when you find out you can slide along the blood.

fairy tale fights prev 02This is in fact a part of the achievements promised in the game, and you can bet that there are more just as twisted. The game created a bit of a stir when the announced that they were including a “Kill 1000 Children” achievement. That certainly has helped its press profile, but the game still needs to deliver on the game play. The biggest issue may be that the controls are little different.  Having to use the second stick as your attack, especially in a hack and slash game is going to be a bit weird. It took me a few minutes to get it down, but until it was explained to me it was rather frustrating.

fairy tale fights prev 03With 4-player co-op you can pick from fair tale characters like Little Red Riding Hood, or the Emperor in his new clothes, well fig leaf anyway.  They take on lumberjacks and other mainstays.  The twisted take on the fairy tale world allows some great platform levels. Though the 2.5d perspective made some of the more intense platform elements more difficult than they had to be.  It also makes some of the instant death areas of the game much harder to traverse. It’s set up so that you use the depth to hide in the background, but the depth isn’t immediately clear.

fairy tale fights prev 04Overall the combination of gratuitous violence, an obviously dark sense of humor, and childhood figures is an appealing idea. The execution is a little rusty, but there aren’t many platformers out there. Getting together friends to play through this also brings up thoughts of the classic arcade games.  The game is due in October, and I am looking forward to giving it a thorough look.
