Destroy All Human! Path of the Furon

Is anyone tired of this yet?

For a series that essentially was nothing more than a gimmicky Grand Theft Auto clone, Destroy All Humans has done rather well for itself. The upcoming Path of the Furon will be the fourth game in the series. The last installment on the Wii was rather fun, but it was missing that essential upgrades that differentiated it from the earlier PS2 titles, beyond some motion controls and pointer functions. Path of the Furon brings the series onto the HD systems, and while the gameplay hasn’t been given much of an upgrade, the engine looks fantastic.

In general I wonder how much this cosmetic change will matter. Many 360/PS3 owners may have missed out on the Wii version of the game, and considering the story picks up right where that game leaves off, will be at least somewhat out of step with the updated time and place. Not that dick and fart jokes really need continuity. In the end, fans of the series will find an ample amount of crude humor, and zany weapons. As far as that prospect goes, this game delivers.

I do have to give this series some credit, as they have managed to have pop culture references that span decades, and the humor remains pretty much in tact. This time Crypto and Pox are taking on Las Vegas mobsters. While this is ostensibly different than the battle against a fast food tycoon, the premise is stretched pretty thin nonetheless.

The franchise needs a bit of a break. Splitting a series across systems doesn’t do much to keep a strong following, and recycling ideas between games makes for a bored players. The Wii’s control system didn’t workout well, and the PS3/360 return to a much more familiar territory. I can say that controls would be the one stand out improvement next to graphics. So do you want to play the same game a fourth gone the looks nicer, and has the classic control scheme reinstated?
