Activision Keynote CES 09

The President and CEO of Activision talks at the 2009 Consumer Electronic Show

<br />Mike Griffith, President & CEO of Activision headed up a keynote that began with members of the Neversoft development team behind Guitar Hero: Metallica performing “Fuel”. When he did come out, he mentioned that he wanted to talk about how videogames would be eclipsing all other forms of entertainment in the future. The guitar Hero franchise is an example of this where the musical experience taps into two markets, both music and videogames.

Music sales are being partly driven these day by games such as Guitar Hero, with sales of downloadable songs in the millions. Sales of real electric guitars and amplifiers are up at Guitar Center in 2008 27% over the previous year, which was directly attributable to music based games.

141,000 songs have been posted by community members using the Guitar Hero: World Tour in-game studio.

People are watching less television, recorded music sales are down, as are movie box office ticket sales. The number of people as well as the amount of time they are spending playing videogame is up. Hardware has advanced enough to enable videogame developers to realistically tell a story that is compelling. This type of entertainment is compelling to those looking to be immersed and active in something.

Technology has also reached the point where community is just as important as the gameplay. Online play and tournaments are only the beginning. Gaming is changing the way stories are being told. And with that the speech was over.
