SimCity Creator is a lighter version of the classic city builder. Meant for the “casual” audience of the Wii, it takes the series back to its simple roots. This means it strips away the feature laden complexity of the more recent PC titles. At first glance it looks like any other SimCity game, albeit with more cartoon art stylings. This is part of the aesthetic design of the new game, everything has been made to fit with the overall feel of most Wii games.

There is a much more novice friendly design system, allowing you to simply choose the shape of the area you want to zone, and the auto creator will then fill in the grid for you. Meaning that you won’t have to frustratingly plan out each street of your metropolis. With the Wii Remote as a pointing device this is the perfect way to play SimCity on the console.

Of course, this is all just pretense for the disaster system. SimCity Creator has by far the most intensive range of disasters. Almost every disaster is mixed with some sort of motion control. Two of them stand out from the usual monsters, UFO, and plane crashes from previous games. In SimCity Creator, players can drop a giant steel ball on their town and roll it around by tilting the Wii remote around. Think of it as Katamari in reverse, instead of building up a nice ball of crap to turn it into a star, you wreak havoc upon your unwitting citizens destroying everything in its wake. The other is part of the random set, you can smash your city to bits with hammers. This is a great system that makes the disasters much more appealing than just a random event you have to clean up after.

SimCity Creator may not have the depth of simulation of the PC titles, but it isn’t meant to. The whole game looks to be simple, of course the disasters add a distraction, This game hinges on the simplicity being the accessible portion of the game, with a sliding scale of involvement that will allow the player to grow into the game. SimCity Creator is at least worth a look, but it’s hard to judge a city creator in just a few minutes.
