Resistance 2 isn’t the only title that expands the franchise, soon enough you can take your battle against the Chimera on the road. Resistance: Retribution is a new title for the PSP, developed by the Sony Bend team, the guys who brought you Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow for the PSP. Retribution doesn’t retain the same FPS style of the console title, instead it uses a modified engine of Logan’s Shadow. The change in perspective may not be what fans are clamoring for, but it does make the game much more appropriate for the platform.
For those of you who missed out on Logan’s Shadow, the perspective is third person over the shoulder, akin to Resident Evil 4 or Gears of War. What may be the most unique idea the game has to offer is the auto cover system. If you approach a crate or wall your character will automatically duck into cover. This helps to keep the controls simple, giving the game a very easy scheme.

You can easily pick this up and look like an expert, much of the challenge comes not in accuracy, but in reflexes, and strategy. The game will throw a lot at you, with quick changes in the action, you can be casually ambling along right into the face of a salivating Grue. Wait, that’s the wrong game. Well, same idea. Resistance: Retribution for the PlayStation Portable isn’t just a stripped down shooter.

The single player campaign revolves around James Grayson, a British Marine who was forced to shoot his brother who had undergone the beginnings of the conversion process. Players of the original PS3 game understand the process I’m talking about here. It goes without saying that Retribution either matches or out does the dark tone of the original game. Grayson eventually joins the Marquis, in attempt to derail a new Chimeran method of conversion. The levels are quite comparable to the original in texture and design, but Retribution has far more moving platforms and other effects that make the environment more than just a backdrop. Retribution doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does put a nice hubcap on it.
There is promised multiplayer as well as some other unrevealed details that are promised to be announced later on. It plays well, with controls that manage to evoke both Logan’s Shadow, as well as the original title. I would like to see more on multiplayer, as well as the length of the campaign. With the details provided this still looks to be an interesting title.
