This is the answer to the the prayer of anyone who wants to set up a gaming LAN and doesn’t have a lot of money. Firstly, Enemy Territory runs on a PIII 500 with a TNT2 or better. Second, it runs under Linux and installs so easily, even a newbie can get it to run. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly: it’s 100% free!

So, if you have a fat net connection, you can download a copy of Linux for free, then download a copy of Enemy Territory for free, and put both on as many computers as you want for free.

And the game ain’t bad either! Sure, it’s multiplayer only, but it’s a very well rounded and paced game. As far as online World War II shooters are concerned, this is the best yet. No, it’s not Battlefield 1942, but then, BF is in a class all its own. When compared to World War II Online, Medal of Honor, and Day of Defeat, W:ET will win every time.

The player classes are excellent, providing a lot of flexibility and some very interesting weapon load-outs. When was the last time you called in an airstrike or artillery in an FPS? How about used a flamethrower effectively? What about stealing enemy uniforms for camo?

ET does a lot of good things, and it does them with panache. Kills aren’t accrewed: experience points are divied out instead. Get enough XP, you get a promotion. Spend enough time working as en Engineer, and your Engineering skill will go up, allowing faster task completion. Snipers start off wobbly, but after enough successful kills, they’ll get steadier and more deadly.

There are gun emplacements to man, mines to lay, morphine to inject. Yup, medics can bring you back to life when yer lying dead. They make coordinated invasions insanely effective.

Wolf: Enemy Territory is a top notch act. Go download it now. If you have a modem, leave your connection on all weekend to suck it down. It’s really worth it.
