Richard Garfield, who is perhaps most famously known as having created Magic: The Gathering (and with it the genre of the collectible card game), has turned his attention to other games over the last 15 years, including board games and more recently computer/console videogames. His latest venture is Project Mind Twist, a free to play turn based online strategy game inspired by the same type of games that are usually played on a tabletop.

Free to play? Well, yes, there will be plenty of items to purchase for a greater variety of play, but the goal in this development process is simply to allow for a more diverse set of objects for the player to have, not providing any sort of play advantage. The game will provide cross platform support as well, with current launches for the iPhone and PC, specifically as a Facebook application.

By having the game turn based, this is where the cross platform play comes in. The game is currently not announced for Xbox Live Arcade or PlayStation Network, but that has nothing to do with limitations of the game itself, rather the nature of the way their online servers are structured. In order to fully deliver the cross platform play, both Sony and Microsoft might have to give up some of that control they hold on to so closely.

There is a targeted launch of next year, but there is no rush as the developer Mind Control will simply release the game when it is ready. They are confident in the concept and design that they have they can take the time necessary to do it right without rushing to get “something” to market to generate capitol.

Mostly the studio has been doing some “work for hire” and this is a self funded project. They are very passionate about the genre – a group of characters versus another group of characters battling it out on a small map. There are a lot of strategic possibilities, as well as the opportunity for licenses. It should be noted this isn’t a collectible game where it is about out-spending and therefore out-powering the opponent, but the use of strategy and the new items will only add variety.

I’m intrigued.
