Today, there was a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. LucasArts confirmed that the long awaited sequel to Sam and Max Hit The Road, which was to be titled Sam and Max Freelance Police has been canceled.
In a statement on the LucasArts website the decision was made purely on a financial basis:
“After careful evaluation of current market place realities and underlying economic considerations, we’ve decided that this was not the appropriate time to launch a graphic adventure on the PC” says Mike Nelson, Acting General Manager and VP of Finance and Operations. There is currently no plan to reduce staff.
Sad news indeed, especially after Full Throttle 2 has already been canned.
What does this mean for the publisher? It would appear as if LucasArts will rely heavier upon the Star Wars license for further releases. It’s a major shame too, since those adventures (Maniac Mansion, The Dig, Sam and Max, etc.) are what set LucasArts apart from other publishers just a few years ago.
