LucasArts and Bad Brain negotiations fail in a spectacular manner.

What faint glimmer of hope regarding a possible return of the cold-heartedly cancelled Sam and Max: Freelance Police that resided in the hearts of many adventure gamers has now been dug out with a rusty spoon and gratuitously stomped out of existence by the iron heels of LucasArts (or StarwArts, if you prefer). A recent post on the official website of Bad Brain Entertainment reveals that negotiations between the two companies have fallen apart and that any chances of the German company completing the latest outing of Sam and his hyper-kinetic rabbit thing companion have fallen through.
The exact details are unknown, so potential reasons for why exactly things didn’t work out could range from financial issues to a paranoid fear stemming from Bad Brain’s upcoming game, dubiously entitled “The Orgastic 4″. Who knows? Perhaps one company’s idea of how to complete the game wasn’t in line with the other’s plans…in which case we might just have been spared from an atrocious defiling of the Sam and Max series.
On the vaguely visible bright side, the site does mention in reasonably comprehensible English that they are talking to Steve Purcell regarding other potential projects.
“We don’t yet have a deal with Steve Purcell but we are talking and we are talking to him since three month now. It was always our plan B to come up with when the LucasArts negotiations should fail.”
Hopefully, we’ll see some interesting project come to fruition from these guys eventually. As it stands, one can’t help but remember that seminal scene from The Empire Strikes Back where Lando confronts Lord Vader about their slowly degrading agreement.
“I am altering the deal. Pray I don’t alter it any further.”
