The Puzzle Bobble franchise (or Bust-A-Move, depending on your preferences of license) has become a standard bearer for the puzzle genre. It’s highliy unfortunate that the N-Gage entry suffers greatly, making the game unplayable.
The first major problem is the screen. While already small, gets split in half. This wouldn’t be so bad if the bubbles went where they were expected to go. The goal is to line up or group three like colored bubbles. This is rendered impossible by the tiny view area, and the small pixeled arrow shooting the bubbles. The first couple of levels have a “guide” to assist the player in getting the pubbles up, showing where it is going. After that, the player is on their own, and with such a small viewing area, it’s impossible to know EXACTLY where the arrow is pointing.
This falls into the second major problem with the game – controlling the arrow.

The controls in Puzzle Bobble VS are sloppy. There’s way too much “give” when moving from side to side, the arrow will continue to move a pixel or two after players let up from the control pad. When combined with the problem of being able to clearly see where the arrow is pointing, it’s far too easy to have many bad games. Not bad games because of losing to the computer, but just bad games.
There is multiplayer, but it’s got the same problems as the single player game.

| There really is no excuse to get this game. Why hasn't Tetris shown up on the N-Gage yet? | |
