The new Prince of Persia games for consoles and the Nintendo DS have a new hero, a new scenario and plenty of new tricks to work through. The total story for both games has the God of Darkness (Ahriman) and the god of Light (Ormazd) going up against each other, with corruption creeping throughout the land. This isn’t the kind of corruption that one might associate with policemen looking the other way in exchange for envelopes stuffed with cash, but instead the type that kills the land and in turn the people.

This new prince arrives and is seeking a way to get rid of the corruption that has spread throughout the land. It isn’t clear if the DS version takes place before or after the console versions, but they are clearly separate games with their own stories.

Players control the Prince completely with the stylus, by holding the stylus on the screen close the Prince walks and holding it further away will make him run. Tapping the stylus onto an area makes the Prince jump, and slashing or tapping on an enemy will enable an attack.

Throughout the game players will earn and collect coins that will be spent on various upgrades, such as health. There will be 50 levels in the game, and this is going to be a much more “traditional” platformer for players to get through, though the action and story seem to break it out of the mundane mold that many others of the genre suffer from.

Naturally the Prince will not be alone, and in the DS version his companion is Zal, a partially corrupted magician that is able to help in various situations. Like Eleka in the console versions he doesn’t die, and helps out by gaining access to areas that wouldn’t otherwise be accessible. Players hold the left shoulder button to take control of Zal, then tap on a corrupted area, and when combined with the Princes moves, create a combination that is quite formidable.

With the Prince’s sword and Zal’s control of the corruption there are plenty of gameplay combinations that can be created. This Prince has the same “grip claw” as the console version, so clearly this is the same character, running around, sliding down walls and cleaning things up.
