The cutest game of the fall

Everyone from about 18-30 knows that Ninjas are cool. The only real debate is whether they are as cool as pirates. That is best left to nonsensical forum debates that I want nothing to do with. Actually, there are a few people that are older that understand just how cool ninjas are too.

As cool and as deadly as ninjas are, the “cute” label usually isn’t assciated with them. Just imagine deadly assassins viewed through a suguary kaleidoscope.

So what do you get when you combine cute cartoon Ninjas and a Tower Defense game? The answer is Ninjatown. I was sold on this title almost immediately when I saw the art style. Character designs are done by the guy who designs Shawnimals. This take cute up to 11.

The game play is basically a tower defense game. Players take on the role of the ninja master who floats above the clouds. The idea is to build up a Ninja Town, with different types of house representing different types of ninja units. These houses/units can later be upgraded. Of course, after building up the town a little, the monsters begin to attack.

The whole cute things continues with monsters that are in the same style as the ninjas, and it works perfectly. If you have played tower defense before you know what you’re in for. If not, here’s a quick breakdown of how Ninja Town will play out.

Houses are built, monsters attack, and ninjas come out of the houses to defend the town. Defeated monsters award cookies, which can be spent to upgrade houses. Too many monsters that successfully attack the town will end the stage.

There is a variety of ninjas that come out of the houses, of course depending on the house you build. Starting out with the basic black clad ninja, players will eventually gain access to ninjas that have stronger attacks, ranged attacks, distracting ninjas, and more.

The monsters, of course, also come in a few varieties, from those that can split up (literally) to those that are sped up. Essentially as new monsters are added to the mix, new ninjas are also introduced to allow the player to counter the new threat.

It is a simple game style that ends up being far more addicting than it should be. I only got to play a single level, but this is a fun game with a cute art style.
