The basic mechanics of Planet Puzzle League may be familiar to a lot of gamers with its “match 3” style of puzzle gameplay. The twist with this particular titles is that matches can only be created by the player moving blocks on the horizontal plane. Yes, matches can be done vertically, but players are only allowed to switch blocks (2 at a time) from left to right or right to left.

Players can move the indicator or cursor or whatever you want to call it (the icon that shows which two blocks are going to be switched) by using the D-pad. It s, however, much more effective to simply use the stylus to directly select the block and witch it out with the adjoining one.

Planet Puzzle League is one of the classic puzzle games in that it is extremely simple in concept and execution, and horribly addicting. I played a number of four-player matches that were tension filled and exciting. As players create matches to clear the field, the garbage is sent to other players to increase their stack. As in the single player game, if the playing field of blocks reaches the top of the screen, the match is over.

It is possible to clear the segments of garbage on your screen by making a match with blocks that are directly adjoining the offending area. This will cause the garbage block to turn into an area of playable blocks, allowing the player to then attempt to clear it out via the “match three” method.

It may not be one of the deepest games for Nintendo’s latest handheld, but is sure is fun to play. I spent far too long one afternoon in multiplayer matches when I should have been working. Planet Puzzle League is a very addictive game. Simple in concept and execution, yet it provides plenty of challenge.
