Back at E3, we had a short chat with Greg LoPiccolo, Vice President of Product Development for Harmonix, the developers of the recently-released Karaoke Revolution Vol. 2. With all the E3 hubbub, the interview got lost in the shuffle, but now that our review of Karaoke Revolution Vol. 2 is up and Harmonix and Konami have just announced Karaoke Revolution 3 for PS2 and and an Xbox version of the original Karaoke Revolution, we felt it seemed appropraite to dig it back up.

Speaking with him, we found out a few interesting tidbits about what we can expect from the developer in the future.

Being huge Frequency and Amplitude fans, we asked whether we’d be seeing a third title in the series. Unfortunately, he said that due to poor sales, the chances of Harmonix developing a Frequency 3 anytime soon would be very slim. By comparison, the first Karaoke Revolution had been very well-received, so the prospects for that series seemed to hold far more potential.

Next, we asked about Karaoke Revolution expansion discs. Japan has already seen many of them, and the US version still has menu options for expansion discs, and yet we’ve yet to hear about any expansions outside of Japan. Greg said that expansion discs on consoles have time and again suffered poor sales in America, and that Harmonix opted instead to do Karaoke Revolution Vol. 2, which would not only give players new songs, but new gameplay modes as well.

Finally, we asked, after working on two titles for Konami, if there was any chance we’d see a long-term relationship between the two companies. Greg’s response was that Harmonix takes their games one at a time, and while they’ve enjoyed working with Konami thus far, they don’t yet know what’s in store for them in the future.
