In which I begin to hallucinate and bark loudly during meetings

So yesterday I wound up staying out *FAR* too late and needed to face either not getting enough sleep and possibly sleeping through the alarm and missing appointments, or just staying up and plowing through. After deciding to just forge ahead, I got quite a bit of work done, until about 4:45a.m. when my motor just sort of… died.
I had been typing an article for half an hour and went to read it over and couldn’t understand what it was. It had become a combination of freeform prose combined with tech observations and an essay on the glories of Las Vegas. I had to delete it and close my eyes.
I wound up getting approximately an hour or so of sleep at my desk in the hotel, and begun my day very bleary eyed. Looking in the mirror was rather scary so I decided to wear my sunglasses. Just so you know, I wear glasses normally, so these would be prescription sunglasses. If you’re reading this and I met with you on Wednesday at CES, that’s why I was wearing my sunglasses – to protect you from looking at my horribly bloodshot and puffy eyes, not because I as trying to be cool.
One appointment just… vanished into thin air, so like yesterday I decided to wlk around and reschedule my remaining appointments in the area to doing something impromptu rather than waiting around for hours. Thankfully it worked for the most part, and was able to get through several interviews early enough that I was able to head over to the press room and have lunch while doing a little bit of work. Please note I didn’t mention getting breakfast.
I had an interesting discussion at Verbatim’s booth regarding storage and sizes of media and user requirements. Recently announced was the 12 Gig miniature hard drive – a flash based product. This is a perfect solution for business travelers on the go as they are able to keep plenty of contacts, email databases, presentations, video files, etc. right now it is a bit pricey, as one might expect, but in a little while as larger capacity flash drives become available and the technology is cheaper, these will come down in price. As it stands, the 8 Gig Store N go has dropped and is much cheaper than the $179 MSRP of the 12 Gig version. Remember when it was over $100 for a Gig?

Anycom has, as it did last year, its wireless speaker, which still works great. In addition their primary focus this year is the FIPO, which acts as a bridge between your Bluetooth enabled MP3 playing cellphone (or other Bluetooth MP3 player) and your car stereo. At $99 this is an aftermarket device that will need to be installed. Once put in place, the FIPO simply plugs in, and will connect to the cell phone to play the MP3 files. What makes this very nice is that it connects to all iPod accessories, as the base of the unit has the same connection. This means you don’t need an iPod in order to take advantage of some of the MP3 peripherals out there.

Norcent is looking like a very promising up and coming performer in the television and display market. What I saw were a lot of good quality large displays (40” and more) for well under $1000. This appears to be a great way for many to enter the HD era without breaking the bank. There was a rather light 10.1 megapixel camera for $179 – a very good price for what is a great camera. Later this year the company will have some MP3 players hitting the market as well. A growing company with a strong footing.
The lack of sleep hit me rather hard towards the end of the day, and beginning about 3:00 I started getting a little loopy. If I met with you on Wednesday afternoon and I seemed a bit… weird, I apologize, it was just the lack of sleep catching up with me. I left the show floor and headed back to my hotel at the end of the day, and decided I needed a very low-key night. I don’t plan on going out and doing anything. I may go get dinner, but nothing spectacular. Day 6 I leave Las Vegas – I’ll have a wrap up of the trip down in the next, and last CES 2007 diary.
